Blog » Wanted in the Cloud : JAVA 7,8 … DEVELOPERS
TweetPosted on | July 8, 2011
Although Java has been around for more than a decade, eons in the tech world, it was not the most popular skill to learn until now.
Recently, the demand for Java developers surpassed that for PHP developer in Japanese market. There are several reasons that I can think of.
First, Java is the standard development language for Google’s Android, which has took over the top OS from iOS of iPhone in the U.S. market by a huge margin. Japan is expected to follow the same trend as all the major carriers are introducing new Android phones every week.
Second, Java is now owned by Oracle, who bought Sun last year. Oracle is an industry giant with highly profitable business and its Japanese subsidiary has been very successful as well. Though Java is open source technology, the support from Oracle benefits the development of Java and its general reliability.
Third, Java is a number one language in corporate middleware. If you are an entrepreneur, develop a web service or an iPhone app, but if what you want is a stable, well-paid job, this is the space you should look for.
Fourth, while Java has been criticized for its lack of cloud capability, the future versions, Java 7 and 8, are in development and will be “cloud friendly”. This will create a wave of demand for Java developers.
Last but not least, Java is developer friendly. It may not be as easy as PHP for beginners to learn, but OpenJDK and Eclipse offer a rich and free, as in free speech, development environment for everyone. Java works great with Apache, too.
