We had an opportunity to talk with Mike this week. Here is our book review.
Mike Corry is an author of “Oh my God, my boss is Gaijin” and currently the President of Ebisu Solutions K.K., a management consulting firm he has founded this year. He was born in Kobe as a son of an U.S. diplomat. Having spent his childhood in various parts of Asia, he went to University of Virginia and later to Thunderbird School of Global Management for MBA. He came back to Japan as a President of a machinery firm after working in the automotive industry and the U.S. Marine Corps for almost two decades.
In his latest book, “Oh my God, my boss is Gaijin”, he reveals his knowledge and insight in how Japanese can work with foreigners more successfully. Having seen so many perfectly capable Japanese people misunderstood by foreign peers, he decided to offer his thoughts to everyone.
The beauty of this book is its simplicity and practicality. Rather than explaining why it is or whether it is right or not, he tells us what works. How to keep a good relationship with my boss? What should I say in a conference? What is my boss thinking? These are kinds of questions that any Japanese working with foreigners come across in a regular basis.
Each topic is presented in a small chunk so that we can read it in three minutes waiting for a next train. The book is very easy to read and enjoyable. It won’t take too long to finish if you bring it with you to work.
